My name is Esther Hwang, and I lead Unscripted Movement — a practice built on the idea that each body is unique, and each person has something unique to express in any given moment.
Throughout my career adventures — from nonprofit to education to data science to dance — I've found healing in my darkest times through movement and creative expression.
I studied contemporary dance with Celeste Miller, whose training comes from the likes of Alwin Nikolais, Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey. It is from these bodies of knowledge that I ground my practice.
I believe in the power of bringing people together to make meaning and to ignite curiosity and creativity through exploratory play!
I bring my background in community building and facilitating learning into unexpected spaces. The Unscripted Process exists to help people get unstuck and reconnected — because new problems need new approaches.
Fun facts about me: I'm a freediver (scuba diving without the oxygen tank). I sewed my wedding dress. And I dream of retiring to a tiny home in New Zealand.
Three offerings, each shaped to its setting — care facilities, workplaces, and schools. All are designed to be fun and accessible, welcoming people of every background and hesitancy.
In-person sessions can be 60 or 90 minutes, and can accommodate groups from 3 to 100 people.
Movement games, creative activities, improvised movement, and storytelling opportunities through facilitated sessions — designed to honor each resident's body, history, and capacity for expression.
Embodied workshops for teams ready to rework their relationship to work itself — bringing body awareness into the workday and using theater-rooted methods to find new approaches to stubborn problems.
Vibrant contemporary dance education for students of all ages — training young choreographers and dance storytellers. All experience levels welcome.
The Method™
Unscripted Movement serves to help people reconnect with themselves and each other through movement, creativity, and play — cultivating confidence, presence, and belonging in a world that often limits us with its scripts.
Every session starts with a check-in where each person shares how they are doing, as well as any needs, limitations, or concerns they are bringing into the space.
From there, we begin moving with simple, low-pressure activities that are approachable for every kind of mover.
Now that we're warmed up, we can explore a question and express our ideas through movement and play.
We close out with reflections on how the experience went, so we can deepen our connections with each other and refine our process.
From the notes

I honestly have nothing to write about. Writing these blog posts is such a cerebral exercise, and it might be more evocative to dance and journal through movement…
